When we go through difficult times, whether in our personal lives, disasters (like what we experienced last week), or in relationships, we quickly try to figure it all out in order to get through the situation. Often we see people do this "mental gymastics" we like to remind ourselves of the importance of reconciling God (or a concrete answer from Him on my time) with a need for understanding. The western (even western Christian) world values clarity, knowledge, and certainty. We crave explanations, rationales, and a sense of control over our circumstances. However, our journeys with Christ often requires us to embrace mystery and the unknown, trusting in God's wisdom even when our understanding falls short.
Human understanding is finite. We are bound by our limited perspectives, experiences, and knowledge. Despite our best efforts, there are aspects of life that remain beyond our comprehension. The Bible reminds us of this in Isaiah 55:8-9: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." We only know what we know.
So first we have a choice to acknowledge these limits. When faced with suffering, loss, or uncertainty, clients (ourselves included) often seek answers that simply aren't available. We must come to acceptance of this reality-- and as we allow God into the limitations of our human condition He can take over our miopic vantagepoint and replace it with His glory and power.
Faith, by its very nature, involves trusting in what we cannot see or fully understand. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as "confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." This confidence is not rooted in our ability to understand or control, but in our trust in God's character and promises.
Lean into God in these precious times of despair and even hopelessness. Doing this fosters a deeper relationship with God, and allows us to rest in His sovereignty and care.
In moments of uncertainty, scripture and prayer become vital anchors. The Bible is filled with stories of individuals who faced unimaginable trials without clear understanding, yet found strength and hope in God's presence. Reflecting on these stories can provide comfort and perspective.
Prayer, too, is a powerful tool. It allows us to express our fears, doubts, and questions to God, seeking His guidance and peace. Cultivate a robust prayer life, creating space for honest communication with God.
One of the most profound truths of the Christian faith is that God is in the business of redemption. Romans 8:28 assures us that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." This doesn't mean that every situation will be easily understood or that suffering will be eliminated, but it does mean that God can bring good out of even the darkest circumstances.
We can help clients to look for signs of God's redemptive work in their lives. This might involve recognizing growth, finding new purpose, or experiencing unexpected blessings. By shifting the focus from understanding to trusting in God's redemptive power, we open the door to healing and transformation.
In the end, the tension between God and understanding is a central part of the Christian journey. We are always desring to move toward a deeper trust in God. By embracing the mystery of faith and finding comfort in God's unchanging character, we can navigate the uncertainties of life with such a beautiful hope and peace.
Questions for Consideration:
How can you cultivate trust in God during times of uncertainty and confusion?
What are some specific personal, friend’s, or even biblical stories that offer comfort and perspective?
Do I tend towards understanding (wanting the answer) or mystery in my own faith journey with God? What does God say about this?
